Woman compensated for injury caused by faulty gym equipment

A woman who was injured while using faulty gym equipment has been awarded more than £4,000 compensation.

The 54-year-old was taking part in resistance training under the supervision of a personal trainer when the accident happened. She was told to pull a heavy rope with a moulded handle as part of the exercise. As she pulled with both hands, the handle came away from the rope and she fell backwards to the ground.

She suffered a broken wrist, which had to be placed in a cast. However, she found that she could not tolerate the cast so medical staff used a splint instead. She had to wear this for six weeks until the fracture healed.

She was unable to undertake any household chores during this time and needed help with her personal care for four weeks.

The woman took legal action against the gym, claiming it was negligent in failing to supply safe equipment and allowing her to use apparatus that was dangerous and not fit for purpose.

The gym admitted liability and agreed an out-of-court settlement of £4,250 to compensate the woman for her pain and suffering, and the inconvenience caused to her home and social life.
